| In this role-playing activity you take the part of a consultant called upon to guide a local Council in making the best decision about a community scientific problem or issue. To gather information and report your recommendations, you join an on-line Inquiry where experts will make presentations FOR and AGAINST various solutions.
A special 'Control Computer' lets you select from a range of Speakers and Topics and keep a record of your reaction to them. Other presenters offer opposing views to persuade you to "change your opinion" about a particular speaker's arguments. The controls also let you explore relevant sites, review Speakers' Notes, record data on their performance, and submit a Final Report. After choosing one of the issues to be investigated, a Brief will 'set the scene'. The Chairperson will guide proceedings and assist when difficulties arise. Each problem may be completed over more than one session. The purpose of this activity is to encourage you to weigh key arguments, critically evaluate evidence, and develop justifiable opinions on important scientific issues. |
