ST. STEPHEN'S GIRLS' COLLEGE COURSEWARE

Instructors at St. Stephen's had very specific requirements for the Biology module: they did not want "hard-wired" content that could not be added to or amended freely, and the courseware's working structure had to reflect the inter-relatedness of the broad topics in their curriculum.

A Web-based module was the obvious solution, particularly given the enormous amount and excellent quality of biology resources available from labs, universities, and science foundations all over the world--already online and only waiting to be discovered!

The tool we chose to organize all this potential is an inexpensive, easy-to-use web navigation package called WebTours. Teachers construct the tours themselves, searching the Web for the latest and best resources in biology education, then organizing each topic into concise, focussed lessons. Teachers can also encourage students to develop research and analytical skills by having them construct their own WebTours as assignments.

Graphics and layouts for the school's WebTour's license were custom-designed. Individual topics can link out to or incorporate quizzes, forums, web links, Authorware, and other types of Web-supported multimedia.
